Top 7 Christmas Movies to Watch This Holiday Season

December is here! While you are busy meeting deadlines, you could miss out on the holly-jolly Christmas vibes around the town. If FOMO hits you hard, you have the best excuse to devote some time to watch these seven Christmas movies I have listed in this article.

This “feel-good” factor of Christmas movies comes when viewers, like us, enter the fictional world where we recognise and realise our relationships and self-worth. These Christmas movies provide much-needed solace and encourage us to work through the challenges of life.

So get your popcorn tub, and get yourself in the mood for Christmas by watching these movies right away!

7. The Princess Switch, 2018

This Netflix Christmas trilogy stars the High School Musical actress Vanessa Hudgens, who in The Princess Switch is a small-town baker and a doppelganger of the Duchess of Belgravia (a fictional town).

This Christmas romance film isn’t straightforward, meaning it is either a contemporary romance or a royal romance. The movie shows baking competitions with a Christmas theme, lovely carpeted staircases in the royal palace, and angelic-old men showing people the direction of their hearts.

IMDb: 6/10

6. Elf, 2003

“Elf” is a Christmas comedy, starring Will Ferrell as Buddy, who was raised by Santa’s elves. This human elf learns about his origins and visits New York City to meet his biological father.

The film is hilarious, heartfelt, and cheerful, and families can enjoy watching it together. I am sure you will be rooting for Buddy as the movie comes to an end.

So get your favourite blanket out, get cosy, and start exploring the life of Elf!

IMDb: 7/10

5. A Christmas Carol, 2009

What is even Christmas without watching one of the most famous Christmas movies, “A Christmas Carol”? Talking about the man who wrote Great Expectations and Oliver Twist (just to name a few), Charles Dickens wrote “A Christmas Carol,” one of the most compelling stories ever, back in 1843.

The tale was later adapted for the big screen several times. Robert Zemeckis, the director, had Jim Carrey play Ebenezer Scrooge.

Watch the movie to see Scrooge’s encounter with three ghosts on Christmas eve who encourage him to become a better man.

4. A Christmas Story, 1983

This movie reminds the viewers of the importance of family.

Given the clever works of creator Jean Shepherd, this cherished film, “A Christmas Story,” follows the endeavours of youth Ralphie Parker (Peter Billingsley), who invests a large portion of his money dodging a bully, and longing for his ideal Christmas present, which is a Red Ryder air rifle. Most of the time in conflict with his father but loved and supported by his mother, Ralphie faces difficulty coming to Christmas Day with his glasses and his expectations.

Rotten Tomatoes: 90%

IMDb: 7.9/10

 3. Serendipity, 2001

“Serendipity” is a Christmas film because it succeeds in keeping the magical feeling throughout the story. Though the movie barely made a dent after its release, thanks to the tons of heartfelt Christmas films, Serendipity picked up the pace as one of the festive classics.

Sentimental and a New York rom-com, the movie shows the couple pulled apart due to outside forces and failing to get each other out of their heads.

Watch the chemistry between Kate Beckinsale and John Cusack this Christmas.

Rotten Tomatoes: 59%

IMDb: 6.8/10

2. The Holiday, 2006

You probably won’t get over “The Holiday”. I am not someone who can watch a movie multiple times, but this has been one of my favourite movies to watch during Christmas. Personal reviews aside, The Holiday is not particularly a Christmas movie, but it sure is a holiday-time movie.

In the movie, Cameron Diaz, playing Amanda, is an effective film trailer supervisor, and Iris Kate Winslet, a wedding writer, chooses to switch homes to get away from the exceptionally terrible men in their lives. Paving the way to New Year’s Eve, Amanda goes total cottagecore in Britain; Iris absorbs the Beverly Slopes sun.

The title of the film, which is synonymous with vacation, actually takes viewers to the winter season holiday.

Enjoy the Christmas songs throughout the film.

Rotten Tomatoes: 51%

IMDb: 6.9/10

1. Klaus, 2019

A Spanish-American animated film, Klaus shouldn’t be missed out on this Christmas. This is one of the best movies that will fill your life with a beautiful story, plenty of laughter, and sweet moments. This hand-drawn animation film uses volumetric lighting, which makes the characters expressive.

The storyline goes like this– Jesper, a narrow-minded mailman, is compelled to move to Smeerensburg by his dad. Be that as it may, he comes in contact with a toymaker named Klaus, to spread happiness in the dull and bleak town.

Enjoy this excellent movie with great characters and an interesting plot and in no time, watch it become your favourite go-to movie each Christmas!

Rotten Tomatoes: 95%

IMDb: 8.1/10

Concluding Note

Watching holiday movies is the best way to escape reality in search of comfort and positivity. Christmas movies are a popular choice, and some people have invested their holidays in the above-listed “feel-good” Christmas movies. These movies create a profound sense of meaning by promising love and social connections and restoring hope.

Watching holiday and Christmas movies is a steady diet of optimism, making us more creative and open-minded.
