Chandigarh to Chandratal: The Ultimate Spiti Valley Road Trip Guide

-

Many dream of the roadtrip from Chandigarh  to Chandratal Lake, one of the most spectacular Himalayan journeys in India. And this truly isn’t a regular mountain holiday,  but a gradual transition, from plains to colonial hills, from Apple valleys to high-altitude deserts, and from green landscapes to the raw wilderness of the Himalaya.

The Shimla-Kinnaur-Spiti route is considered the better way to reach Chandratal because the ascent is gradual, helping the body adapt before reaching the high-altitude sections around Kaza and Chandratal, making the trip more comfortable and enjoyable.

Why Take the Chandigarh–Shimla–Kalpa–Tabo–Kaza–Chandratal Route?

Mainly first-time travellers make the mistake of entering Spiti through the Manali side, which appears shorter on the map, but there’s a rapid altitude gain. The route via Shimla and Kalpa allows the body to acclimate naturally as you climb toward the higher reaches of Spiti Valley.

Why is this route better?

Better rhythm of the road for a long-distance self-drive trip

Gradual change in the landscape

Enjoyable trip rather than rushing through places

Chandigarh to Chandratal: The Road Trip That Slowly Changes You

Some trips aren’t about ticking places off a list, and this one isn’t. The road from Chandigarh to Chandratal Lake through Shimla, Kalpa, Tabo, and Kaza feels surreal, more like watching the mountains slowly rewrite the landscape around you.

Here’s a balanced itinerary that perfectly worked out for me.

Chandigarh to Shimla: The Easy Beginning

Starting from Chandigarh feels ordinary enough. Good roads, chai stops, smooth highways. The climb begins after a short while.

Shimla isn’t the dramatic part of the trip, but it’s more like the soft opening scene with tall pines and old colonial buildings. The very first moment when the city heat disappears.

A lot of travellers usually rush through Shimla, but I didn’t.

On a route like this, the first night matters because your body gets time to adjust and your mind starts shifting gears, too.

  • Time: 3–4 hours

Shimla to Kalpa

Here, the mountains start getting serious. The drive is long, and the road trip starts feeling like it’s hitting you.

You will pass by mountain cut into impossible roads, river valleys, and now and then, you will stop just because the view is so gripping.

Kalpa has a different energy altogether. It is much slower, quieter, and cleaner than Shimla.

In the morning, you can witness the light hitting the snow peaks of the Kinner Kailash range and apple orchards.

If you are planning for this trip, Kalpa is where you would want to wake up early. Not sightseeing, but just for sunrise.

Kalpa to Tabo: When the Himalayas Change

Of the entire circuit, this cut is one of the most memorable parts. You leave behind the greenery, and the mountains  become drier, sharper, and rougher.

Valleys widen and colour changes from green to brown or grey, and suddenly you find yourself in Spiti.

Tabo feels ancient, for it doesn’t try to impress anyone. There’s kind of a pause or stillness in the air where travellers who usually rush slow down.

The famous Tabo Monastery is a must-visit here.

Tabo to Kaza: The heart of Spiti

The next destination is Kaza, and the drive from Tabo to Kaza isn’t that long, which is a bonus because you will want to stop.

If you have time, you could see Dhankar Monastry, it sits above the valley which seriously doesn’t look real at all.

And then comes Kaza, which feels different; it has movement, it has guesthouses, bikes, cafes, and road trippers and yet feels remote.

This is where most people realise that they have fallen for Spiti because it feels stripped down to what matters: endless skies, cold air, and silence.

Places Around Kaza

Kaza is more than a stop; it has some of the most unforgettable places in the valley. There’s Key Monastry, Hikkim, Langza, and Komic.

Top experiences around Kaza:

  • Monastery visits
  • High-altitude village landscapes
  • Stargazing at night

Kaza to Chandratal:

This is where the real journey begins. The trip starts feeling less like a road trip and more like an unforgettable experience for years.

The road from Kaza to Chandratal is rough, unpredictable, and honestly exhausting at times. But strangely, that’s exactly what makes it special.

You leave behind the small cafés and guesthouses of Kaza, and slowly everything starts disappearing. Fewer vehicles, fewer villages, less noise.

Only mountains.

The landscape becomes wider, emptier, and much more dramatic than before. At some points, it genuinely feels like you are driving on another planet.

After Kunzum Pass, the route toward Chandratal becomes narrower and bumpier. Most vehicles stop at the parking area, and from there, you walk toward the lake.

And honestly, the first glimpse of Chandratal feels unreal. The lake appears quietly between the mountains, almost hidden.

If the weather stays clear, staying overnight near Chandratal becomes one of the best experiences of the entire circuit.

At night, the sky looks unbelievable. You see stars everywhere, properly bright and sharp, something most people never get to experience in cities anymore. The silence around the camps makes the whole experience feel even more surreal.

  • Distance: ~75 km
  • Time: 4–5 hours

Things That Help During the Chandigarh to Chandratal Trip

A few tiny things can make your journey even better.

Try to start early morning

  • Road conditions in Spiti change quickly.
  • Water crossings become stronger later in the day.
  • Early starts help a lot, especially on the Kaza-Chandratal stretch.

Don’t rush

The Shimla side works perfectly because the journey feels gradual. You slowly adjust to the altitude while also properly experiencing each place.

However, it’s advisable to cover Spiti slowly, let your body adapt to the drastic change.

Must carry essentials

  • Warm layers even during summer
  • Power banks
  • Offline maps
  • Basic medicines
  • Snacks and water
  • Extra fuel if possible

Best time for a road trip

The best months usually are:

  • June
  • July
  • August
  • September

Why This Road Trip Feels Different?

A lot of mountain trips feel exciting while you are there and slowly fade later. Spiti doesn’t.

Somewhere between the roads of Kalpa, the silence of Tabo, the skies of Kaza, and the stillness of Chandratal, the trip starts changing your pace completely.

You stop checking your phone constantly. You stop thinking about deadlines. You simply sit, watch the mountains, and exist quietly for a while.

And honestly, that’s probably the best part of the Chandigarh to Chandratal journey.
