Harry Potter TV Series Coming Soon: Everything You Need To Know

Harry Potter fans can hold their breath for this…

A new scripted Harry Potter TV series is coming soon!

Warner Bros. Discovery has confirmed this, and the company has announced Harry Potter TV series will be based on all seven books written by J.K. Rowling.

The year 2022 was incredible for franchisees on the small screen. With Amazon Studios, Lord of the Rings series, and The Rings of Power, HBO’s Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon.

Fans of Harry Potter have been calling for a small-screen adaption ever since the last Hary Potter movie, Deathly Hallows Part 2, which premiered on July 7, 2011.

As announced, the Harry Potter TV series will be arriving on Max between 2025 and 2026. The show was announced on April 12, 2023, as part of Warner Bros. Discovery’s presentation to reveal HBO Max and Discovery+ merging into a new streaming service, MAX.

Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO of HBO & Max Content said, “We are delighted to give audiences the opportunity to discover Hogwarts in a whole new way. Harry Potter is a cultural phenomenon, and it is clear there is such an enduring love and thirst for the Wizarding World. In partnership with Warner Bros. Television and J.K. Rowling, this new Max Original series will dive deep into each of the iconic books that fans have continued to enjoy for all of these years.”

As of this month, no casting announcements have been made for this TV series. But, it has been confirmed that the series would feature a whole new cast and continue to explore the amazing Wizarding World with the same level of iconic characters, details, and locations, which has captured the hearts of millions of fans over the past 25 years.

Will The Harry Potter Cast Be The Same As The Movie?

It will be pretty thrilling to watch who gets into the shoes of the Harry Potter movie characters once the casting decisions are made. What the fans are waiting to learn is, who would be the Hogwarts trio of Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger, which was portrayed by Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson, respectively, in the film adaptations.

It is currently not known if the way Harry Potter books will be categorized into the TV series. It is expected that the first book, ‘Philosopher’s Stone,’ will be covered in a single season, but it is still not clear if the last few books, like the ‘Half-Blood Prince’ or ‘Deathly Hallows’ will be spread across several seasons.

This approach would not only provide a chance to dive deeper into the story than the movies did but would also offer an opportunity for the current generation of actors to bring these fantastic characters to life on screen.

Will J.K. Rowling Be Involved?

J.K Rowling said, “Max’s commitment to preserving the integrity of my books is important to me, and I’m looking forward to being part of this new adaptation which will allow for a degree of depth and detail only afforded by a long-form television series.”

The biggest hurdle in bringing the HP series to the screen has been in securing J.K. Rowling’s involvement. As an author, she has the final say on any use of her work. However, it has been confirmed that an agreement has now been reached, and she has the creative control over the HP TV series.

Apart from being the bestselling book, the Harry Potter franchise has expanded into a multimedia phenomenon. The film adaptations have earned more than $7.7 billion at the box office across the world.

The Fantastic Beasts film franchise, theme park attractions, toys, and games have also contributed to the franchise’s success. Recently, a new video game called ‘Hogwarts Legacy,’ was also launched. In addition to this, the hit Broadway show ‘Harry Potter and the Cursed Child’ serves as a sequel to the book series, expanding the universe and its fanbase.

The Harry Potter TV series is in very early development, with no showrunner or cast members attached at the time of writing. However, according to Deadline’s sources, it’s aiming for a 2025/2026 release.
